An tEarrach Thiar @ Cafe Frosch, Kyoto

A lovely bit of news reached our ears today, all the way from Japan!

The backgrounds painted by illustrator Robin Hoshino for Eimhin‘s upcoming Cúl an Tí project An tEarrach Thiar, are currently on display at Café Frosch in Kyoto!
The paintings depict the landscape of Inis Mór much as it was in the 1930s when Máirtín ó Direáin lived there, and conveys the light from the lingering sun, as the day comes to a close.

Delighted that Robin’s excellent work can be appreciated in person! You can see more of Robin’s work on her website here: http://www.hoshinorobin.com/

Next week we’ll be releasing prints from these shorts for sale in our shop, so keep your eyes peeled and save up your shekels!

Centra – Live Every Day TV spot

Earlier on this year we were invited by Russell Curran Productions to produce an animated segment for this Centra spot. You can see our work at about the 20 second mark!

The animation was designed and created by Carol with lighting and technical supervision by Eimhin.

In this piece on our studio space at A4 Sounds, Carol can be seen working on an initial proof of concept too from about 3:20:

Many thanks to the Russell Curran team for bringing us in on the project:

Art In Ireland Feature!

Our studio A4 Sounds was recently featured in this special for Art In Ireland by Culture Fox TV’s Niamh Gibbons.

You can see some behind the scenes footage from our upcoming TG4 projects  ‘An tEarrach Thiar’ & ‘Cill Aodáin’, as well as an ad which Carol recently completed featuring Alphabetti Spaghetti!

An tEarrach Thiar – BG Process

We were very generously asked to contribute to an anthology of Irish language songs, produced in collaboration with Sónta Films, the Cartoon Saloon and Kíla.

Here’s a little taste of Eimhin’s contribution: An tEarrach Thiar
Based on a poem by Máirtín Ó Direáin, with an original arrangement by Kíla and lush vocals provided by Lisa Hannigan, the film takes place in that golden hour, as the sun sets on a spring day on the island of Inis Mór.

You can view a previous post, featuring photos taken on a research trip to Inis Mór here: LINK

Here’s how I went about putting together one of the early shots:

atetboards_03

Initial storyboards, roughly laying out the pertinent elements and actions involved in the scene

tobar_bg_03

Layout drawing, locking down the details, and adding in the foreground element to help with framing

Timelapse of the background being painted

bg_03_complete

Final painting. The addition of some cliffs in the BG, helped to delineate the brightly lit ‘steps’ from the sky

atet_03

And here it is comped in with the characters (character animation by Katie Sherlock)

Within each scene the BG painting was separated into different layers, with some clone-stamping to cover any overlap. This allows some repositioning, and addition of cloud movement in the sky, or wave movement on the water. In addition to these digital edits, some other BGs required more lighting in comp, but as this one is one of the introductory shots it wasn’t as extreme in terms of photoshop work to reign in or emphasise the painted elements.

Here are some photos of our brilliant animation crew at work:

From the 5th to the 8th of November A4 Sounds and Paper Panther are hosting an art exhibition and auction in aid of the current refugee crisis with proceeds going to Global Giving to support refugees. The UN Refugee Agency estimates that more than 4 million people, half of whom are children, have fled Syria to neighbouring countries, and 7.4 million people are displaced internally within Syria. The crisis is the worst the world has seen in over twenty years and the need for refugee support is dire.  At this critical point with refugees facing a winter that is predicted to be one of the worst on record, A4 Sounds and Paper Panther put a call out for artists to donate time and work and over thirty artists have responded.

Eimhin McNamara, one of the founding members of Paper Panther, an award winning group of animators who come together to develop and create short films, commercials, TV series and workshops, developed the idea for the Artwork Auction to raise funds for the refugee crisis.

“It came about as a response to feeling so helpless to the constantly increasing numbers which are being reported. The format for the exhibition and auction came from being previously involved with the Animation Art Show, another excellent fundraiser, in aid of children’s charities. With A4’s Art 4 Refugees show we hope to not only raise funds through the creation of artwork but also to create a human connection, closing the distance between the idea of ‘them’ and ‘us’ and help build a more open and caring world community.” Once the initial shape of the project was defined Eimhin brought the idea to A4 Sounds, the arts organisation and space where Paper Panther are based, who immediately came on board as collaborators, providing a venue, event management and carpentry services to set up the exhibition space.

A4 Sounds arts organisation is involved in this initiative as it’s mission is to foster interdisciplinary collaboration to add to the field of socially engaged art through their projects and actions. They want to make art that matters. This art auction will matter to the refugees and proceeds will fully go to charity, namely Global Giving.
