Disjointed: Space Travis

Space Travis from Eimhin’s Weed of Fortune Disjointed short, which was produced with Titmouse last Summer.
Designed by Eimhin & built with Niamh Bennett & Svetlana Sobcenko out of a 2×4
We installed an LED light into the body. The LED light itself was only a 2 millimeters smaller than the torso so that took some precision filing
He’ll be sharing a bunch of behind the scenes footage on his Patreon over the coming weeks if ya’d like to pop over there for a visit: patreon.com/eimhinmcnamara

We’re very excited to announce that a project we worked on last summer with Titmouse is now out:
Eimhin directed a 1 minute stopmotion segment for the Netflix Original Disjointed!

Thanks to
Simon Wilches Castro for inviting us to take part in this little experiment, Megan Love for her support through all the saw dust covered emails from Eimhin, as well as Will Feng’s cheerleading and the rest of the Titmouse team for their generosity and time! Be sure to check out the other episodes to see the other great animations they produced!

For this project Eimhin put together a regular who’s who of Paper Panther All Stars, carving puppets and props out of an oak couch, painting miniature matte backdrops, building tiny lights into tiny astronauts, giving an elephant a pedicure, bending loads of wire, and in general getting covered in dust – only the most glamorous work for such an elite!
Thanks again to Svetlana Sobcenko, Ciara Daly-Nolan, Niamh Bennett, Clare Carroll, Leigh Arthur, Sarah Walsh, Tom Lawton, Frank Prendergast, Katie Sherlock and Carol Freeman & Pádraig Fagan!

A special thanks goes out to A4 Sounds, without whom we could not have got this project off the ground. Thanks to their facilities as well as the expertise of our fellow members we made it happen! If you’re considering giving studio life a go, we couldn’t recommend them enough: https://a4sounds.org/studiomemberships/
We documented the process pretty thoroughly, so over the next few weeks we’ll be releasing more shots from the building stage, as well as animation timelapses and other wee peeks behind the scenes, so stay tuned!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We currently have A4 & A3 scene illustrations from the film available to purchase from our online shop: LINK

An tEarrach Thiar was originally written by Máirtín Ó Direáin, with musical interpretation by Lisa Hannigan, Kíla & Fionnuala Ní Chosáin.
We look forward to announcing the screening times!

An Iascaire

Here is a little bit more from Eimhin’s upcoming project An tEarrach Thiar, featuring a fisherman character who appears towards the end of the film.

This  fisherman featured in the 1932 documentary Aran of the Saints, courtesy of the IFI Film Archive, was the basis of the below design:

A little bit of research for this scene’s location:

Kilmurvey Beach, Inis Mór

Here’s the layout sketch with annotations. This layout sketch went through a few iterations before getting the right level of ‘shape’ in the strata of limestone rocks on the beach.
Below is an earlier, more generic looking beach:tobar_bg_25

And here is the completed background by Robin Hoshino and Eimhin

A lovely bit of news reached our ears today, all the way from Japan!

The backgrounds painted by illustrator Robin Hoshino for Eimhin‘s upcoming Cúl an Tí project An tEarrach Thiar, are currently on display at Café Frosch in Kyoto!
The paintings depict the landscape of Inis Mór much as it was in the 1930s when Máirtín ó Direáin lived there, and conveys the light from the lingering sun, as the day comes to a close.
Delighted that Robin’s excellent work can be appreciated in person! You can see more of Robin’s work on her website here: http://www.hoshinorobin.com/
